CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - The Alabama soccer team opened its 2010 exhibition slate with a 3-0 victory over Tennessee Tech Monday afternoon at the soccer field on the Girls Preparatory School campus. The Crimson Tide scored in all three of the 30-minute periods played in the sweltering afternoon heat.
"It was a good evaluation of some of the players who didn't play as much last year and of all our freshmen," head coach Todd Bramble said. "There is a balance with being happy with what we saw and identifying what we need to clean up the rest of the preseason."
Alabama had 27 players find action in the unofficial season opener, with nine newcomers making their first appearance in a crimson and white uniform.
The Tide out-shot the Golden Eagles 26-6 and tallied five corner kicks. Alabama rallied off 10 shots in the first frame and then added 12 more in the second before recording four in the final 30 minutes.
UA opened the scoring in the sixth minute when senior Victoria Frederick found net far post on a one touch volley from the left side of the box from six yards out. Frederick was awarded for her run across the goalmouth and finished the Carly Mygrants pass. Mygrants was getting her first minutes since the 2008 campaign.
Alabama added another in the second period in the 42nd minute when sophomore Amanda Ortegon finished a Josie Rix pass from the middle of the box. Rix was able to give the hometown faithful something cheer about as she tallied the assist at her high school alma mater.
The Tide capped off its day in the third period when Lindsey Sillers stole the ball deep in the TTU defensive third and took advantage by finishing a chance on the right side of the 18-yard box.
Alabama will now spend the week at the Big Canoe resort in north Georgia for training camp before heading to Atlanta to face Mercer in its final exhibition fixture of the preseason. The two teams will meet on Saturday, Aug. 14 at 2:00 p.m. at the Tophat Soccer Complex which will mark the homecoming of former Tophat players and staff coach K.K. and Meghan Duffy along with assistant coach Jason Lowe.
