PLACE, Wash. - University of Alabama sophomore golfer Scott Strohmeyer defeated Cameron Peck 2&1 to advance to the second round of the 2010 U.S. Amateur at Chambers Bay Golf Course on Wednesday.
The 37th seeded Strohmeyer battled back from an early two-hole deficit against the 28th seeded Peck to square the match at the fifth hole before subsequently taking the lead on the sixth hole. From there he built a 3-up advantage at the turn, ultimately maintaining a lead throughout the rest of the match before closing Peck out.
Strohmeyer will take on either No. 5 seed Justin Thomas or No. 60 seed Robert Leopold in the Round of 32 starting at 10:30 a.m. (CST) Thursday. If Strohmeyer is victorious he will then play later in the afternoon in the Round of 16 against an opponent as yet to be determined.
Strohmeyer, a native of Auburn, Ala., qualified for match play at the U.S. Amateur for the second straight year. He fired rounds of 76 (+5 at Chambers Bay) and 70 (-2 at Home Course) to finish at 3-over-par 146.
