LEXINGTON, Ky. - The volleyball team was presented with an American Volleyball Coaches Association Team Academic Award this week for excellence in the classroom during the 2009-2010 academic year. Based on the AVCA's calculation, the Crimson Tide earned a 3.397 team grade point average last season.
"This has been a goal for our team since last spring when we just missed making this prestigious list," head coach Judy Green said. "We are all very, very proud of our team's diligence and commitment in the classroom. Each player has worked extremely hard individually to do their part to help the team earn the AVCA Award. I also want to thank all of our academic support staff, especially Fern Hampton, for always being there to assist our student-athletes. This award we certainly share with them."
Alabama is one of just 450 programs across all men's and women's, collegiate and high school programs to receive the award. In addition, it is one of just three Southeastern Conference institutions to earn the recognition, with the others being Mississippi State and South Carolina.
The AVCA Team Academic Award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale during the full academic year (both semesters or all quarters). It also includes all varsity athletes who competed in volleyball with the institution for any portion of the academic year.
