BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - A total of 23 members of the Alabama rowing team were named to the 2010 Southeastern Conference Spring Academic Honor Roll the league office announced Tuesday. The rowing team's total boosted Alabama's overall tally to 101, the second highest in the league, just behind South Carolina.
"I think this shows that our ladies are committed to being true student-athletes and that the academic side is the most important," UA head rowing coach Larry Davis said. "I'm very proud that as we progress as a program, and get better as a program, our commitment to academic excellence remains strong."
Five senior rowers, Jessica Autrey, Tacoma Morrisey, Stacey Ogle, Bailey Sanders and Katherine Spohr, earned a spot on the honor roll for the third consecutive year.
There were 11 others who put their name on the list for the second time, including sophomore Erika Baranek, junior Helen Barnes, junior Camille Campbell, junior Chelsea Collins, junior Amelia Houghton, junior Lauren Hovey, sophomore Kristen Iverson, senior Sara Leibold, sophomore Stephanie Varner, senior Cathryn Whitlock and senior Sarah Witt.
"The support our ladies receive from the University and the folks at the Center for Athletic Student Services is really phenomenal and helps the students focus on their academics and do their best," Davis said. "I really like the consistency we've shown in the classroom, year-in and year-out."
Junior Jessica Allaway, junior Daniella Barone, junior Alissa Kranz, senior Jessica Scivley, sophomore Valerie Vargas, junior Leigh Erin Waddell and sophomore Veronica Wilson all earned the honor for the first time.
The team's conference honors comes on the heels of the news that Alabama led the nation in Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association Scholar Athlete awards in 2010, with a program-high 11 rowers earning the honor, tying UA with Brown University for the national lead.
To earn a place on the SEC Academic Honor Roll, a student-athlete must earn a 3.0 or better grade point average for either the preceding academic year or their career and be a sophomore or better in academic standing. The spring list honors those student-athletes that participate in baseball, men's and women's golf, rowing, softball, men's and women's tennis, and men's and women's track and field.
The Tide had 51 and 55 student-athletes named to the SEC Fall and Winter Academic Honor Rolls, respectively, giving Alabama a total of 207 upperclassmen on the honor roll for the 2009-10 academic year. The league's freshmen will be honored later in the summer.
