TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Five matches against teams that advanced to the NCAA Championships last season highlight the 2010 volleyball schedule, which was announced Wednesday by head coach Judy Green. The Crimson Tide will take part in three tournaments and one match against in-state foe Alabama A&M before opening Southeastern Conference play on September 17.
"Our 2010 schedule will be challenging right out of the gate," said Green. "Our three non-conference tournaments will give us a chance for some quality wins. Our goal is to come into SEC play with a winning record and then fight our way through the conference."
Alabama opens its fall slate on August 27 at the University of Iowa tournament in Iowa City, Iowa. Teams and times have yet to be determined for the three-day event. The Tide then returns home for its annual Bama Bash running September 3 and September 4. Alabama will face the likes of Toledo, Furman and UAB at its only home tournament of the season.
Alabama remains at home for a single match against Alabama A&M, its first 2009 NCAA Championship opponent of the season, on September 7. The Tide will wrap up the tournament portion of its schedule the following weekend when it heads to San Marcos, Texas for the CenturyLink Premier hosted by Texas State University. Alabama faces North Texas and UT-Martin on September 10 before ending the event versus the host Bobcats on September 11.
The Tide will kickoff SEC action on September 17 on the road at Mississippi before hosting LSU and Arkansas on September 24 and September 26, respectively. Alabama opens the month of October at Georgia and Auburn then returns home for contests with Florida on October 8 and South Carolina on October 10. The Tide will spend the next two weeks as the away team beginning October 15 when it heads to Kentucky followed by Tennessee on October 17. October 20 will be spent just a short drive west when Alabama plays a midweek matchup at Mississippi State.
"Once again, the SEC looks to be highly competitive, and we will have to be focused and mentally ready every match," added Green. "The top four to five teams in our conference should certainly find themselves in postseason play."
The second half of the conference slate begins October 24 in Tuscaloosa against Mississippi. Alabama will then hit the road for matches at Arkansas and LSU on October 29 and 31, respectively. The Tide faces Eastern Division opponents in Tennessee and Kentucky to start the month on November before its final road trip of the season to South Carolina on November 12 and Florida on November 14. Alabama will close out its regular season with a trio of home matches beginning November 19 with in-state foe Auburn. The Tide will welcome Georgia on November 21 before its season finale against Mississippi State on November 24.
"Right now, our players need to be committed to doing the right thing this summer and, based upon their decisions and choices, we will know where we will be starting come August 4," said Green. "The expectation is to be much improved in 2010."
