Hamrick Captures 2nd Alabama Amateur

KILLEN, Ala. - For the second consecutive year, University of Alabama golfer Hunter Hamrick won the Alabama Amateur Championship, taking a one-stroke victory on Sunday at the par-72, 7,133-yard Turtle Point Yacht and Country Club in Killen.
"I stayed calm and positive the whole week," Hamrick said. "My putter kept me in it. I'm very happy with the way I fought and grinded it out."
Hamrick, who fired a third-round 64 on Saturday to take a six-stroke lead heading into the final round, shot a 74 on Sunday to finish at 279 (-9). Hamrick held off a charge by Glenn Northcutt, who fired a final-round 67 (-5) to move to within one of the lead from eight shots back entering the day. Hamrick weathered a tough front nine on Sunday, shooting 39 with three bogeys before settling down to play par golf on the final nine with a 35 (-1), including a birdie on the 13th hole.
"I just wasn't hitting it well," Hamrick said. "I chipped out of the woods a few times, didn't hit the greens, but I am really happy with the win. It shows where my game has matured. It showed that I can get a win when not playing my best golf."
Hamrick moved atop the leader board on Saturday to lead the 72-player field with a third-round 64 (-5) in which he fired seven birdies and had an eagle on the 11th hole. Overall, he carded rounds of 70-71-64-74-279, 9-under par for the tournament. His 64 on Saturday matched his low competitive round which he also shot in the Jerry Pate Intercollegiate at Old Overton (par-71) and in the U.S. Amateur qualifier at his home course of Wynlakes Golf and Country Club (par-72) in Montgomery.
Hamrick's second straight Alabama Amateur title adds to his impressive 2010 season that includes earning Honorable Mention All-America honors from PING following his sophomore season with the Crimson Tide.
