ATHENS, Ga. - Freshman Alexa Guarachi fell in the first round of action at the 2010 NCAA Singles Championship to Stanford freshman Mallory Burdette at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex on the University of Georgia campus. No. 33 Burdette, fresh off clinching the NCAA Team Championship for the Cardinal on Tuesday, won 6-1, 6-3 over 58th-ranked Guarachi to advance to the Round of 32.
"Alexa was struggling to get anything started because of how Mallory came out," head coach Jenny Mainz said. "Mallory played a very solid match and really came out hot hitting her targets. She was doing all the right things from the start. I'm proud of Alexa though, and I think she's had a very good season. She's been training very hard with a lot of purpose and diligence. She came in here prepared, and Mallory needed to play her best tennis to beat Alexa, which she did."
Burdette carried the momentum from last night's team championship into her singles match today getting off to a quick start. The Cardinal netter gave up one game to Guarachi before taking the first set 6-1. In the second, Burdette jumped out to a 4-1 lead, however Guarachi would win two of the next three games setting the score at 5-3. Burdette closed out the match in the next game to move on to the second round of the tournament.
Guarachi, and sophomore Courtney McLane, will begin their run in the NCAA Doubles Championships Thursday, May 27 at 3:30 p.m. CST against the Boise State duo of junior Lauren Megale and senior Pichittra Thongdach.
"Alexa has done a good job leading this team and was playing for more than just her today," Mainz added. "She still has a chance in doubles tomorrow and has really been working hard for that as well."
