OXFORD, Miss. - Due to weather conditions on Saturday, the Mississippi Open was canceled after just a few events were completed on the day at the Ole Miss Track and Field Complex.
"The ones that got to compete, I thought, competed pretty well," head women's track and field coach Sandy Fowler said. "The surfaces were soaking wet. The 4x100 meter relay could have run a little bit better. We had some handoffs that weren't the cleanest. Now we'll just go get ready for the SEC Championships coming up."
The hammer throw was the first event of the day for the women in which sophomore Amethyst Holmes notched a personal-best with a heave of 174-10 to finish second. Freshman Lee Stowers was seventh with a mark of 155-2.
In the javelin, junior Meghan Austin tallied a second place finish with a throw of 137-7. Junior Rachel Robbs (135-5) and freshman Bekah Hoppis (135-5) followed closely in third and fourth, respectively.
Junior Haley Moody clocked a season-best time of 18:14.36, finishing third in the 5,000 meters, while junior Megan Williams was fifth with a time of 18:26.49.
The Alabama 4x100 meter relay team of sophomore Audra Frimpong, senior Chealsea Taylor, junior Kim Laing and junior Toni Graham finished third with a time of 46.13.
Up next, Alabama will take a week off from competition in preparation for the SEC Outdoor Track and Field Championships, May 13-16, in Knoxville, Tenn.
