GAINESVILLE, Fla. - The Alabama women's track and field team wrapped up its second outdoor meet of the 2010 season on Saturday at the Florida Relays at Percy Beard Track at James G. Pressly Stadium. The competition today consisted of select field events and relays.
Inching closer to her personal-best, junior Meghan Austin threw the javelin a distance of 149-2 1/2. The throw was good enough for third place overall and an improvement by almost five feet over last week's performance. Freshman Bekah Hoppis finished ninth with her mark of 131-9 3/4.
The Tide's 4x100m shuttle hurdle relay of junior Kim Laing, sophomore Audra Frimpong, junior Talaya Owens and senior Chealsea Taylor improved by over a second from last weekend as they finished third with a time of 56.57.
The 4x100m relay team also improved by nearly one second on the season. Laing, Owens, Taylor and senior Heather Matherson compiled the time of 45.89 to finish 13th.
The 4x800m relay team of freshmen Katlyn Will and Elsbeth Denton and sophomores Kelsey Johnson and Leigh Gilmore claimed the title with a time of 9:12.21, an improvement over last week by 35 seconds.
Freshman Wilamena Hopkins came just 2 1/4 inches from setting a new season-best mark in the shot put with a heave of 50-9 3/4 to place sixth.
"I thought that we had a very good meet down here in Florida," head coach Sandy Fowler said. "I talked to the girls about being able to come back from the home meet and set personal and seasonal-bests at another school. That shows that they are ready and moving in the right direction for SECs in May. Meghan Austin did pretty well in the javelin and she's starting to come around to where she should be. Of course, Wilamena (Hopkins) was very consistent again, throwing right near her lifetime-best."
Up next, Alabama will travel to Oxford, Miss., for the Mississippi Invitational on April 10.
