AUGUSTA, Ga. - University of Alabama sophomore Bud Cauley paced the Crimson Tide men's golf team in the first two rounds of the Administaff Augusta State Invitational on Saturday at the Forest Hills Golf Club with a 9-under-par total of 135.
Cauley, a native of Jacksonville, Fla., is tied for second place while Alabama enters Sunday's final round at the par-72, 7,161-yard Forest Hills tract tied for eighth position as a team at 5-under-par 571. The Crimson Tide shot a 2-under-par 286 on the opening nine holes and a 3-under-par 285 in Saturday's second round.
Host Augusta State dominated the opening 36 holes of play and boasts both the team and individual lead. ASU fired rounds of 274 (-14) and 270 (-18) for a total of 32-under-par 544 after two rounds for an eight-stroke lead over second place South Carolina (552). The Gamecocks shot the lowest round of the tournament with a 22-under 266 in round two. Tennessee (559) is in third place with Clemson (560) in fourth while Duke (563) and Georgia Southern (563) are tied for fifth.
Cauley teed off his opening round on the second hole and carded three consecutive birdies to open the tournament. He bogeyed three-of-four holes between the ninth and 12th holes with a birdie on No. 11. Cauley finished off his first round in style with back-to-back birdies on the 17th and 18th holes to finish at 3-under-par 69.
His second round was even more impressive as the sophomore carded a bogey-free round that included six birdies to vault up the leaderboard. Cauley's second-round 66 was his second-lowest round of the season and his fourth round in the 60s in his last five. Clemson's Corbin Mills equaled Cauley's 9-under 135 with rounds of 68 and 67.
Augusta native Lee Knox, a redshirt freshman, is tied for 28th after the opening 36 holes in his hometown. Knox shot a 2-over-par 74 in the opening round but got hot on the second 18 of the day. He opened his second round with birdies on five of his first nine holes. A bogey on the par-4 14th hole was the only blemish on his round of 4-under-par 68. The 68 was a career low and the 2-under-par 142 is a career best of 36 holes.
Sophomore Hunter Hamrick was the Tide's No. 3 scorer on the day at 1-over-par 145. He is tied for 47th after a 1-under-par 71 in round one and a 2-over 74 in round two.
Hunter Slatton is tied for 79th at 6-over-par 150 after rounds of 73 and 77 while Scott Strohmeyer is 92nd at 10-over 156.
