SIESTA KEY, Fla. - The volleyball team had its most successful trip to the SEC Coaches Beach Championships this season with each pair finishing in the top five of their respective division. The Crimson Tide's junior tandem of Calli Johnson and Kayla Schmidt went 7-1 throughout the tournament and knocked off the 2009 defending gold division champions of Nikki Fowler and Kayla Jeter from Tennessee.
"As a team we competed really well," said assistant coach Pavlina Steffkova. "Overall this was the best team finish Alabama has ever had. It was a great day for the Tide with our effort, our attitude and our performance all at a very high level. It was the perfect finish to our spring season."
Joining Johnson and Schmidt in the gold division was junior Mary Catherine Aune and her partner, freshman Kayla Fitterer, who finished fifth. In the silver division, freshman Kelsey Anderson and redshirt freshman Leigh Moyer took home third-place honors, while junior Alyssa Meuth and sophomore Stephanie Riley earned fifth place.
