TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The Alabama soccer team concluded its spring season with another victory, earning a convincing 4-1 win over Jacksonville State Saturday evening. With the win the Crimson Tide wraps up its spring with a 6-1-1 record, including a perfect 4-0-0 mark at the Alabama Soccer Stadium.
Alabama opened the scoring in the 30th minute when Kaitlyn Smith headed home a corner kick from Rosaly Petriello. Smith, who just missed a chance minutes earlier, was able to bury the cross. Smith scored her only goal of the fall season against the Gamecocks and finished off the spring slate with another tally against the in-state foe.
Before the whistle for intermission, Petriello was on the scoring end to extend the Tide lead to 2-0. Petriello caught the Jacksonville State goalkeeper off her line and took advantage with a far-post strike after a few touches from the top of the box.
In the 55th minute Victoria Frederick, who has wrecked havoc on opposing defenses all spring, tapped an Amanda Ortegon pass into the net from six yards out to make the score 3-0 in Alabama's favor.
Eight minutes later the fleet-footed wing capped off the scoring for Alabama on a chip to the upper-V off a nice setup by Tia King. King drew two defenders to open up the goalmouth for Frederick and the team's leading scorer did the rest.
Jacksonville State put one in late in the match to make the final score 4-1. Justine Bernier played the first 65 minutes in between the pipes. Laura Nicholls finished off the minutes in goal.
Frederick earned the Golden Boot for Alabama over the spring with 14 points on five goals and four assists. Petriello followed with nine points on three goals and three assists while Brooke Rogers finished third with seven points on three goals and an assist.
Alabama finished the spring 6-1-1, including a 4-0-0 home record and a 2-0-1 mark against SEC opponents (Vanderbilt, Mississippi and Mississippi State). The Tide outscored its opponents 15-6 and posted three shutouts. Alabama went 4-1-1 against teams that it faced this past fall.
