TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The Alabama soccer team earned two more wins this past weekend. The Crimson Tide downed Georgia State 2-0 and then quickly turned around to beat Mississippi State, 2-1 Saturday. After the weekend Alabama improves to 5-1-1 overall and 3-0-0 at the Alabama Soccer Stadium this spring.
Against Georgia State, Alabama raced out to an early 1-0 advantage after the Panthers goalkeeper inadvertently knocked in a Rosaly Petriello corner kick three minutes into the match.
Petriello would strike again and this time, leave no doubt to who the goal belonged to. Petriello took a Victoria Frederick pass and from 35-yards out and drilled a left-footed strike to give the Crimson Tide the 2-0 victory.
Justine Bernier played the first 70 minutes in goal and Laura Nicholls came in to close out the shutout. The clean sheet marks the third of the spring for the Crimson Tide.
Against Mississippi State Alabama again raced out to an early lead. In the third minute Frederick would set up another goal. This time the fleet-footed forward got end line and sent a pass into the box that Shannon Lathrop was able to volley in for the tally to hand the Tide the early 1-0 advantage.
After a flurry of shots that would hit off the woodwork the Tide was able to break through for its second goal of the contest. Frederick would set up her third helper of the day when she sent a perfectly struck cross to Brooke Rogers who would do the rest with a volley to make the score 2-0 in the 13th minute.
The Bulldogs were able to pull within one but that is all the Tide defense would allow as Bernier played the first 75 minutes in goal and once again Nicholls finished the job. Midyear transfer K.K. Duffy was applauded for her defensive efforts on the day as she was the only member of the Crimson Tide to play all 180 minutes.
The race for the Alabama Golden Boot will come down to the final spring match of the season. Frederick continues to pace the Tide with 10 points on three goals and four assists. Rogers follows with seven points while Petriello is close behind with six.
Alabama will wrap up its spring slate with a single contest at home against Jacksonville State. The two in-state foes will meet on Saturday, April 17 at 5:00 p.m.
