TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Alabama junior outfielder/DH David Kindred and junior right-hand pitcher Nathan Kilcrease were named the Alabama coaching staff players of the week, head coach Mitch Gaspard announced Monday afternoon.
Kindred hit .400 (6-for-15) with two runs scored, two doubles and four RBI and was UA's leading hitter in five games last week. He made his first start for the Tide against UAB on April 6 and went 2-for-4 with a two-run double. He also went 2-for-5 with one double and one RBI in the Tide's win at Kentucky on April 11. He had an RBI double in UA's five-run eighth inning.
"David had a solid week and has earned more playing time," Gaspard said. "He put together some quality games this week and had some quality at-bats. He gives us another left-hand hitter in the lineup."
For the season, Kindred is hitting .304 (7-for-23) with three doubles, three runs scored and five RBI. He is 6-for-13 (.462) in three starts against UAB, Jacksonville State and Kentucky.
Kilcrease posted a 1-0 record with one save and 0.00 ERA in two relief appearances last week for Alabama. He threw six scoreless innings this week and allowed three hits with seven strikeouts and three walks. He held opponents to a .158 batting average.
"Peanut (Kilcrease) continues to do the job for us every time," Gaspard said. "He has had a solid year and is our most dependable relief pitcher. He does all the things we ask him to do and continues to do a good job day after day."
He notched his second win of the season with four scoreless innings of relief in Alabama's 10-4, 11-inning win at Jacksonville State on April 7. He allowed one hit with four strikeouts and two walks in the win over the Gamecocks. He notched his second save of the year with two scoreless innings in Alabama's 11-9 comeback win at Kentucky. He allowed two hits with three strikeouts and one walk. He stranded two base runners in the eighth inning and ended the game with a strike out in the ninth.
For the season, Kilcrease is 2-0 with two saves and team-leading 1.61 ERA. He leads the SEC with 18 appearances on the mound this year.
