TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The Alabama women's soccer team continued its winning ways during the spring exhibition slate with a 3-1 decision over North Alabama. The match was the spring home opener for the Crimson Tide. After the victory Alabama improves to 2-0-1 on the spring season.
Both squads were getting a gauge of each other in the first half of play with Alabama holding the majority of the possession and creating most of the chances.
After the intermission the Tide finally broke through by netting three consecutive goals. The scoring started immediately in the second half when Alabama took possession of the kickoff and did not look back.
Rosaly Petriello gathered the ball and instantly attacked the North Alabama defensive third. The midfielder then found Victoria Frederick on a diagonal run that she took full advantage of. Frederick got behind the defense and beat the UNA keeper near post on a low strike 35 seconds into the half.
Alabama would tack on another in the 52nd minute on a brilliant strike by Petriello. The junior in stride collected a chest trap from outside the penalty area and volleyed while all in one motion with her left foot to give the Tide a 2-0 lead.
UA put the game away with its third tally of the contest. After beating her defender in the corner, Frederick dribbled to the right corner of the box and curled a left footed shot to the left side, netting past the outstretched goalkeeper for the 3-0 lead at the 65 minute mark.
UNA would record one goal late but it was too little, too late as the goal in the 78th minute would be the only tally the Tide would relinquish.
Alabama will return to the pitch on Saturday, March 27 as it heads to Birmingham for two matches. UA will face Samford at 11:00 a.m. and then head over to UAB for a 4:00 p.m. contest against the Blazers.
