TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - For one last chance to qualify for the NCAA Championships, the Alabama women's track and field team travels to Blacksburg, Va., for the Virginia Tech Final Qualifier. The meet will be hosted at Rector Fieldhouse on Saturday, March 6.
The Crimson Tide will be represented by three ladies in Blacksburg, hoping to either improve on their NCAA provisional marks or by notching a qualifying mark for the first time this season.
Freshman Krystle Schade will compete in the high jump with already having grabbed a couple provisional qualifying marks on the season, including a jump of 5-11 1/2. Coming off an All-SEC performance at the SEC Championships last weekend where she finished second, Schade will be looking to clear six feet to solidify herself a position at the NCAA Championships.
Fellow freshman Wilamena Hopkins will appear in two events, the shot put and weight throw. Hopkins notched her first career provisional mark at the SEC Championships last week in the shot put, placing fifth with a heave of 51-11 1/4. She will need to improve that mark, however, in order to get into the national meet. Hopkins has not achieved a provisional in the weight throw this year.
Also in the weight throw will be sophomore Amethyst Holmes who has improved a dramatic 12 feet in the event from last year. Holmes will need to improve by another three feet this weekend to have a shot at the national meet but with the way she has been competing this year, it is a definite possibility.
The meet will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday morning for the Alabama squad.
