OXFORD, Miss. - The Alabama soccer team opened its spring exhibition schedule with a win and a scoreless draw in its two matches this past weekend. The Crimson Tide downed the Vanderbilt Commodores, 2-1 and played the host Rebels to a scoreless draw.
Alabama was on the offensive in its first match of the spring, taking an early 1-0 advantage over Vanderbilt by halftime.
In the sixth minute of the contest junior Brooke Rogers followed a Rosaly Petriello shot and fired a one-touch blast from inside the 18 to give the Crimson Tide the early lead.
Alabama would increase that margin to 2-0 when Lindsey Sillers scored directly off a corner kick in the first minute after the intermission.
Vanderbilt would pull within one with a tally in the 48th minute but the Alabama defense, led by All-SEC goalkeeper Justine Bernier, would not relinquish another goal to earn the 2-1 win. Sophomore Laura Nicholls played a scoreless first half in between the pipes.
Against the Rebels in the night cap the two teams played to a scoreless draw. Alabama tried to catch Mississippi off guard with a quick play off a free kick but the Petriello service that was nicely placed in the lower corner of the goal was blocked late in the second half.
Alabama will return to the pitch and open its home portion of the spring schedule when North Alabama comes to town. The two teams will meet on Saturday, March 6 at 6:00 p.m. at the Alabama Soccer Stadium.
