RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico - The Alabama women's golf team is in second place at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic after a 7-over-par 295 in the first round on Sunday at the par-72, 6,219-yard Championship Course at the Trump International Golf Club.
True freshman Jennifer Kirby is in second place individually after pacing the Crimson Tide with a scorching career-low 5-under-par 67 that included a 31 (-5) on the opening nine holes. She carded a round-best seven birdies and trails only the 66 posted by Purdue's Thea Hoffmeister, who is playing as an individual for the Boilermakers.
Georgia leads the tournament by three strokes over the Tide after firing a 4-under 292. No. 4 Purdue (296) is in third place, just one stroke behind Alabama, with Kent State fourth (11-over, 299) and Oklahoma State fifth at 12-over-par 300.
Tide junior Camilla Lennarth carded a 2-over-par 74 and is UA's second-leading scorer, in a tie for 17th position while sophomore Brooke Pancake is tied for 22nd place after a 3-over 75.
Senior Rhea Nair was Alabama's fourth scorer with a 7-over-par 79 to enter Monday's second round tied for 50th. Senior Helena Blomberg is tied for 69th with a 9-over-par 81.
