TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The women's basketball team (11-16, 3-11 SEC) looks to make it two wins in a row as it takes on Mississippi State (17-10, 8-6 SEC) Thursday in Coleman Coliseum. The game will not only be the Crimson Tide's last in Coleman Coliseum this season, but it will also serve as Senior Night recognizing Alabama's four seniors including Alyson Butler, Dedrea Magee, Courtney Strauthers and Tamara Williams.
"I don't think this is going to be just another Senior Night as this group has seen the program go from what it used to what it is now and what it is working towards in the future," said head coach Wendell Hudson. "There may not be that big a difference in the record numbers, but the progress the team has made as a whole is significant. Our coaching staff really appreciates the job this group has done."
Alabama and Mississippi State met earlier this season, with Mississippi State taking the game 77-44 in Starkville. Junior Tierney Jenkins led Alabama with 11 points, while sophomore Carmen McCoy pulled down a Tide-best eight rebounds. The Lady Bulldogs were led by junior Mary Kathryn Govero with 22 points and were successful as a team from behind the arc, hitting eight three-pointers for the game.
The two teams have met a total of 45 times, with Alabama leading the all-time count 33-12. The win earlier in the season was the fourth straight for the Lady Bulldogs, dating back to 2006.
Last time out, the Tide defeated Arkansas 69-58 in Fayetteville. The victory was Alabama's first win on the road since 2006 and the first win in Fayetteville since 2002. Senior Dedrea Magee led the team in scoring with 15 points while tacking on nine rebounds and six assists. Jenkins earned her 11th double-double of the season with 14 points and 14 rebounds. Sophomore Ericka Russell rounded out the Tide's three double-digit contributors with 10 points.
The Lady Bulldogs enter Thursday's contest off a 50-36 loss to Auburn in Starkville. Mississippi State experienced its worst offensive outing of the year, shooting 28 percent from the field and 13 percent from behind the arc. Senior Chanel Monkango led the Lady Bulldogs with 12 points while senior Tysheka Grimes pulled down a season-best 13 rebounds.
