
Tide Golfers Ninth After 18 Holes at Puerto Rico Classic

RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico - The University of Alabama men's golf team is in ninth place after the opening round of the Puerto Rico Classic on Sunday at the par-72, 6,902-yard Rio Mar Golf Club.
The 12th-ranked Crimson Tide shot an even-par 288 on the strength of redshirt freshman Scott Strohmeyer and sophomore Hunter Slatton.
Top-ranked Oklahoma State leads after a 13-under-par round of 275 with No. 10 Texas two strokes back at 11-under 277. The Tide is just seven strokes back of Clemson (281) in third place with East Tennessee State (284) in fourth and Georgia Tech (285) in fifth.
Strohmeyer is tied for sixth place individually after shooting a 35 on the front nine and a 2-under 34 on the back to equal his career-low round of 69. Slatton fired a 70 for his lowest round of the season and enters Monday's second round tied for 14th.
Sophomore Hunter Hamrick, who entered the event ranked third nationally in the individual rankings, carded a 1-over-par 73 and is tied for 41st. Redshirt freshman Lee Knox shot a 4-over 76 and is tied for 59th.
The nation's top-ranked golfer individually, Bud Cauley, struggled in the opening round on Sunday with a 5-over-par 77 and is tied for 64th. OSU's Kevin Tway leads the event after a 7-under-par 65 with Texas' Cody Gribble in second place at 5-under 67.
The Crimson Tide will be paired with Georgia and Kent State for the second round and will tee off at 8 a.m. local time (6 a.m. central). The third and final round is slated for Tuesday.
