TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Senior forward Tierney Jenkins scored 15 points and pulled down 16 rebounds, notching her eighth double-double of the season, to lead the Alabama women's basketball team (7-1) to an 80-31 win over the Alabama State Hornets (1-5) Wednesday at Coleman Coliseum.
Junior guard Ericka Russell scored 14 points, while freshman guard Shafontaye Myers added a season-best 14 points. Freshman guard Khristin Lee rounded out the four Crimson Tide players in double figures with 10 points.
"We are trying to prepare our team to get better every game," Alabama Head Coach Wendell Hudson said. "I thought in the second half the team really played well. Defensively, we did a great job. I don't care who you are playing against. When you look up at the clock and 10 or 12 minutes have gone by and your opponent has only scored two or three points, you have to realize you played well."
Jenkins, who now has 31 career double-doubles, had already secured the mark by intermission with 10 points and 10 rebounds as Alabama raced out to a 41-20 halftime advantage. The Tide opened the second half on a 20-2 run, leading by as much as 49, to end any threat Alabama State posed.
The 31 points allowed are the fewest by an Alabama opponent since New Mexico State had the same number on Nov. 27, 1998. The Tide held the Hornets to 13.8 percent shooting for the game, marking the lowest percentage a team has shot against Alabama this season.
Additionally, Alabama held a 25-6 advantage in points off turnovers and a 30-12 advantage on points in the paint. The 49-point margin of victory is the Tide's largest this year, while the 11 points allowed in the second half are the fewest allowed by Alabama in any half this season
"I thought Tierney Jenkins played well," Hudson said. "I thought Kaneisha Horn played well. Some new players who hadn't played a lot played well too. Shafontaye Myers played awfully well for us."
Alabama held the Hornets to just 6.3 percent shooting (1-of-16) in the early going while forcing 10 turnovers. Alabama State missed its first six shots and did not score for the first 5:17 of the game. The Tide mounted separate first-half runs of 8-0 and 9-0, leading by as much as 21 on its way to a 41-20 halftime lead. Russell also notched 10 points while Myers added seven points.
The Hornets didn't get on the board until the 14:00 juncture of the second half, after Alabama had already gone on a 14-0 run to take a 55-20 lead. Alabama State notched another basket less than two minutes later before the Tide defense stiffened again, holding the Hornets scoreless from the 11:42 mark to the 6:59 mark.
Nine of the eleven Alabama players that saw action scored at least four points. Jenkins added a team-high four assists as well.
Next up, the Tide hosts Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Saturday, Dec. 4. Tipoff is slated for 2 p.m. CT.
