TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The women's basketball team improved to 8-1 following a 90-56 victory over Arkansas Pine-Bluff on Saturday in Coleman Coliseum. The Crimson Tide had four players score in double figures, led by senior forward Tierney Jenkins and freshman forward Kaneisha Horn who both contributed 18 points.
Arkansas-Pine Bluff grabbed an early lead in the game, going up six by a score of 13-7 with 16:03 remaining in the first half. From there, Alabama used a 9-0 run, capped off by a free throw from senior Varisia Raffington, to take its first lead since the score was 3-2. The Lady Lions cut the lead to one point at 16-15, but Alabama responded with an 8-0 run to extend the lead to nine points. Alabama kept the pressure on Arkansas-Pine Bluff and pushed the lead to 41-27 going into the half.
"We have got to get over starting slow," Alabama head coach Wendell Hudson said. "We talked about it as a group and made a little adjustment at halftime. We have just got to find a way, find a group of people, that can get us off to a better start in the first five minutes. The good thing about this team is they think they're going to get things done. The effort has been there."
Coming out of halftime, Arkansas-Pine Bluff looked to get back into the game by cutting the lead to as little as 11 in the opening minutes, but from that point on it was all Alabama. The Tide went on an 8-0 run to push the lead to 19 and essentially out of reach for the Lions. Alabama continued to build on that lead throughout the half until it was up by 34, which ended up being the final margin of victory.
The Lions were led in the game by senior Laquisha Slaton who notched 20 points on the loss.
The Tide used advantages in second chance points 25-8 and points off turnovers 33-9 to help solidify the victory. A huge boost from its bench, powered by Raffington's 14, helped as well as Alabama outscored the Lions bench 37-7.
"We're playing hard," Hudson added. "We're still young from the standpoint of knowing how to be ready to play everybody at a certain time. Effort-wise, we couldn't ask for any more. We're asking them to do a lot of things. We're asking them to run all these defenses and we're changing defenses. Then we're asking them to run the floor and then not run the floor. They have bonded together. I'm real pleased with the way this team is growing right now."
The Tide returns to the hardwood on Sunday, Dec. 12, when it takes on Kansas on the road in Lawrence. Tipoff is slated for 2 p.m. CT.
