BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Sophomore outside hitter Kayla Fitterer was named the Southeastern Conference Player of the Week for volleyball on Monday after having the match of her career against Kentucky. This is the 31st weekly league award for the Crimson Tide and first for Fitterer.
"Kayla is truly deserving of this honor," Alabama head coach Judy Green said. "It is the best complete performance by an Alabama outside hitter since Erin Heffner played for us."
In Sunday's match against the Wildcats, Fitterer rattled off a career-high 34 kills and 24 digs to help Alabama beat Kentucky for the first time since Oct. 19, 2007. Her 34 kills is the highest total of the season in the Southeastern Conference. In addition, she is the first Tide attacker to reach the 30-kill milestone since four-time All-SEC selection Heffner did so with 33 against the University of Arkansas at Little Rock on Sept. 11, 2004.
The performance also gave the Edwardsville, Ill., native her eighth double-double of the season, with six of those coming against league opponents. For the weekend, Fitterer averaged a staggering 5.62 kills per set as well as 4.12 digs per frame.
Fitterer, and the rest of the Tide, returns to action on Friday, Nov. 12, when it heads to South Carolina to take on the Gamecocks at 6 p.m. CT.
