TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The women's basketball team opened its 2010-11 schedule with a 103-58 exhibition win over the University of Alabama in Huntsville on Saturday in Coleman Coliseum.
Senior Tierney Jenkins led a balanced Crimson Tide scoring attack that saw six Alabama players score in double figures, with 15 points and nine rebounds. Junior Alicia Mitcham scored 12 points to go with a team-high 13 rebounds while sophomore Celiscia Farmer added 13. Freshman Kaneisha Horn and junior Ericka Russell each had 12 points, respectively.
"I thought our intensity level was up really high," Alabama head coach Wendell Hudson said. "We're going to be a different type of basketball team than we've been in the past. We're going to play full-court basketball. If you're going to play, you're not going to play ten minutes at a time. You're going to play five minutes, and I thought we played a lot of people a lot of minutes. I thought our effort was particularly good in this exhibition game."
The 103 points marked the 48th time in its history the Tide has broken the century mark. Alabama scored 51 points off 41 UAH turnovers and held a 64-22 advantage on points in the paint. Moreover, the Crimson Tide bench outscored the Lady Charger bench by a 66-7 margin.
"I thought we shared the basketball well," Hudson said. "Scoring, I don't expect anyone to average 20 points a game for us this year but closer to 12 points is more likely."
The Crimson Tide opened the game on an 18-2 run, taking advantage of nine UAH turnovers over the first 6:18. Alabama would score 33 points off 24 Lady Charger turnovers in the first half.
UAH briefly cut into the lead following a quick 9-2 run to make it 20-11 but would not get any closer the rest of the half. The Crimson Tide used a pair of 15-4 and 17-1 runs to take a commanding 56-21 halftime lead. Mitcham came off the bench to lead Alabama with eight first half points, connecting on all three of her shots. Jenkins added eight points and four rebounds, while freshman Shafontaye Myers scored seven first half points.
Alabama increased the lead to 48 midway through the second half before UAH was able to cut into the margin with a 14-4 run to make the score 80-44 at the 7:43 mark. From there, Alabama outscored the Lady Chargers 20-5 over the next 3:59 as Jenkins and Farmer combined for 11 points to put the game far out of reach.
"We've been playing each other all preseason and summer so to finally get to competition to play against somebody else was great," Jenkins added. "It was nice to see what we look like and see what we need to work on."
Twelve different Alabama players scored at least two points. The Crimson Tide held a 24-4 advantage on second-chance points and a 20-4 margin in fast break points. Alabama led for all but the first 55 seconds of the game.
Alabama returns to action on Friday, Nov. 12, in its regular-season opener versus Tennessee State at Coleman Coliseum.
