The University of Alabama men's basketball team continues its two-game homestand on Wednesday when it hosts South Alabama in the Jaguars' first visit to Coleman Coliseum. Wednesday's contest is a part of a doubleheader with the women's team and will tipoff 30 minutes after the women's 5 p.m. game against Alabama State. Tickets for the men's game will be honored at the women's contest.
The Crimson Tide faces South Alabama after getting back in the win column on Saturday with a 76-50 win over Alabama A&M to even its record at 3-3. The Jaguars will be playing their second straight game against a Southeastern Conference opponent after falling at home to LSU, 80-65, on Sunday afternoon to fall to 2-3.
"Coach [Ronnie] Arrow has a reputation for being an outstanding defensive coach and dynamic on the offensive end," Alabama head coach Anthony Grant said of the USA program. "They're used to winning. They're a program that has a lot of pride and plays hard. We'll have to come prepared, do a great job from a scouting standpoint and be ready to play."
The two teams have met twice before on neutral courts and have split those meetings with the Tide winning the most recent contest, 59-45, in the 1998 Arby's Hardwood Classic in Birmingham, Ala.
Alabama's frontcourt will look to continue its strong play as the team has outscored its first six opponents by an average of 16 points per game in the paint. Tony Mitchell helped contribute to that margin against Alabama A&M as he notched his fourth career double-double with 12 points and a career-high 15 rebounds. Freshman Trevor Releford also continued his strong early season play with a career-high seven assists on Saturday.
The Jaguars are led by preseason All-Sun Belt first team selection Tim Williams' 16.2 points and 5.4 rebounds per game. Martino Brock is second on the squad in scoring with 13.7 points on a team-high 15.6 shots per game.
Tickets for Wednesday's game are $12 for adults and $8 for youths. As with all non-conference games, Family Fun Packs are available and for a minimum of $44 for four tickets includes four hot dogs, chips and soft drinks.
Following Wednesday's contest, the Tide will have its first true road test of the season when it ventures to West Lafayette, Ind., to face No. 22/18 Purdue on ESPN2.
