TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The Alabama softball team swept a pair of games in Fall Brawl II Friday evening at Rhoads Stadium. The Crimson Tide defeated Central Alabama Community College 6-0 in game one with Lauren Sewell tossing a two-hit shutout. The Lady Mocs of Chattanooga came back late to tie the Tide in the top of the seventh in game two, but Alabama struck back in the bottom frame to claim a 5-4 victory.
"I'm really proud of the way our team fought at the end of the second game to win," head coach Patrick Murphy said. "Kayla Braud and Courtney Conley came up big with their home runs tonight and Jackey Branham did a great job getting on to score the winning run.
"I want to thank Chattanooga for coming down to play us. SEC rules ban us from leaving campus in the fall which makes it hard to schedule Division I schools in fall ball and they are a very good program to test yourself against."
GAME ONE
Alabama sophomore Lauren Sewell held the Trojans to only two hits while striking out 10, leading the Crimson Tide to a 6-0 victory over CACC.
The Tide stretched its lead out in the bottom of the second. With Jennifer Fenton and Kendall Dawson on first and second, Kayla Braud drove a triple to right field and came around to score on a throwing error by the second baseman, giving Alabama a 4-0 lead.
Courtney Conley powered home two more Tide runs in the bottom of the third with her two-run blast over the center field wall, giving Alabama its final 6-0 lead.
GAME TWO
The second game of the evening proved to be the most exciting yet this fall with Chattanooga coming back to tie the game late before surrendering the lead back to the Tide in the bottom of the seventh.
Fenton put the Crimson Tide on the board first with a two-run shot over the wall in center, plating Braud. Cassie Reilly-Boccia drew a throw and got caught in a rundown attempting to steal second allowing Whitney Larsen to score from third just before being tagged out, giving Alabama a 3-0 lead.
After the Lady Mocs platted a run in the fifth and three in the sixth to take a 4-4 tie into the seventh, Branham hit a leadoff double off of the right fielder's glove to start the bottom of frame of the inning for the Tide. Branham advanced to third on a wild pitch and came around to score the game-winning run on a passed ball.
NEXT UP
The Tide will finish out its fall slate Saturday when Alabama takes on Wallace State and Samford in Fall Brawl III. The Crimson Tide will face Wallace State at 2 p.m., at Rhoads Stadium and will take on the Samford Bulldogs immediately following the Wallace State game.
