TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Alabama softball freshman Kayla Braud has been named one of eight finalists for the Johnny Carpenter Prep Athletes of the Year. The award is given to the best prep athlete from the state of Oregon. The winner will be announced Sunday at the Oregon Sports Awards.
"I am truly honored to be a finalist for this award," Braud said. "It took a lot of hard work and practice, but it was the support from my coaches and teammates that helped gain success and I am really thankful for the honor."
The annual show honoring the state's best performers and performances will return to the Nike World Campus.
The two-hour event, which begins at 7 p.m. in the Tiger Woods Center, salutes the state's top athletes, coaches, teams and more for their efforts in 2009 or lifetime achievements.
Winners will be announced in 16 categories. A total of 80 finalists and winners were chosen by a statewide panel.
Braud enters her freshman campaign at the Capstone with a national record 103-game hitting streak. She was a first team All-League selection, first-team All-State honoree and league MVP all four seasons at Marist High School where she played for her grandfather Bob Hammitt.
Braud was the Oregon 4A Player of the Year her junior and senior seasons and was named an Under Armour All-American as a senior. Her hitting streak was named the No. 1 record-breaker by ESPN RISE.
Braud and the rest of No. 2 ranked Alabama will open the 2010 season against No. 9 Missouri. The two teams will meet for a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 13 and wrap up the series on Sunday, Feb. 14. All three games will be played at the Alabama Softball Complex.
