TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The Alabama baseball team opened preseason practice with a 90-minute workout in the Hank Crisp Indoor Facility on Friday afternoon, the first official day of practice allowed by the NCAA.
The team worked on infield/outfield defense and base running and hit in the indoor cages as rain and cold weather forced the team inside for its first official practice.
"We were able to get done what we needed to get done despite the weather," Alabama first-year head coach Mitch Gaspard said. "The energy level was good and we got a lot accomplished. Now we need to take that onto the field for our first two intrasquad games."
Alabama was scheduled to hold its first intrasquad games on Saturday and Sunday, but inclement weather has altered the schedule the next few days. The Crimson Tide will practice in the Hank Crisp Indoor Facility on Saturday and will hold its first two preseason scrimmages at Sewell-Thomas Stadium on Sunday, Jan. 31 and Monday, Feb. 1.
The team will practice Sunday at 1 p.m., with an eight-inning scrimmage set for 2 p.m. On Monday, the team will practice at 2 p.m., with an eight-inning scrimmage to begin at 3 p.m.
The Crimson Tide's season opener is set for Saturday, Feb. 20, when Alabama hosts the South Alabama Jaguars at 2:05 p.m. at Sewell-Thomas Stadium. Season tickets are available by calling 1.800.TIDETIX.
