Alabama won the first meeting between the two Southeastern Conference Western Division rivals by a 66-49 margin in Baton Rouge on Jan. 9. The Crimson Tide will be gunning for its first regular-season sweep of the Tigers since the 2006 season.
"Obviously they'll (LSU) be very familiar with us, as we will with them," said Alabama head coach Anthony Grant. "Both teams will make adjustments based on what happened in the last game so we're in the process of getting prepared for that and it should be an exciting game."
The Crimson Tide is 12-7 on the season and 2-3 in Southeastern Conference action after defeating No. 23 Mississippi State, 62-57, on Saturday for its second win against a ranked opponent this season. LSU has struggled in its encore from last year's SEC regular-season championship with a 9-10 mark this season and an 0-5 record in the league including a 73-63 loss to Mississippi in its most recent contest.
Alabama's defense has been its hallmark as of late with six of its last seven opponents shooting less than 40 percent from the field and SEC opponents shooting a combined 38.5 from the field against the Tide.
On paper, Wednesday's game should be a low-scoring affair as Alabama is averaging just 61.4 points per game in league play while LSU is averaging 61.6. However, the Tigers are surrendering 72.4 points to their opponents while Alabama is allowing just 61 points per game with only Arkansas scoring 70 or more points against the Tide's defense.
"I think our defense has given us chances in every game that we've played and I think that's one thing that's been consistent throughout SEC play," said Grant.
Offensively, the Tide has struggled from the field, however the team's top three scorers are all shooting better than 50 percent from the field. JaMychal Green leads Alabama against the Tigers after just missing his fifth double-double of the season with 18 points and nine rebounds against Mississippi State. The sophomore is averaging 15.2 points and 7.4 rebounds per game on 52.6 percent shooting.
Mikhail Torrance, after being held to just three points against Tennessee, has returned to form with a game-high 20 points, his fifth 20-point performance of the season, against Mississippi State. That pair of experienced players has been buoyed by the re-emergence of freshman Tony Mitchell in the starting lineup. In the last two games, Mitchell is averaging 8.5 points and 11.5 rebounds per game.
LSU is paced by Tasmin Mitchell's 17.9 points and 9.5 rebounds per game. Against SEC competition, he is averaging 19.0 points and converting on 51.4 percent of his shots. Bo Spencer and Storm Warren also average double-figures with 15.3 and 13.5 points per game, respectively.
Following Wednesday's contest, the Tide will take to the road and face in-state rival Auburn on Saturday at 3 p.m. in the final meeting between the two in Beard-Eaves Coliseum.
