FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - With most of the events taking place on Saturday, the Alabama men's track and field team made the most of its first day of competition at the Razorback Invitational at Randal Tyson Track Center.
"All the guys that competed tonight are very young and so for them to come in and get those kind of results is pretty decent," head coach Harvey Glance said. "We're still trying to put some things together and get the team collected. There are still things we need to iron out and make better. Hopefully we'll have everybody in place to do some great things in just a few weeks here. Once we put it all together, I think we'll do well."
After day one of the heptathlon and Alabama's first of the year, Michael Hughes and Justin Brady sit in eighth and ninth place, respectively.
Hughes placed fourth in the 60m dash with a time of 7.24 as well as fourth in the shot put with a heave of 39-8. Brady turned in a fifth-place finish in the high jump with a leap of 6-2 3/4, tying his career-best.
The Crimson Tide had two finishers in the top 10 of the long jump, led by true freshman Quentin Petty's career-best jump of 23-2 to finish seventh. Shaun Gaiser posted a ninth-place finish with his mark of 22-10 1/2.
Tyler Campbell led a 2-3 finish for Alabama in the high jump along with Mike Edwards as they cleared heights of 6-10 1/4 and 6-8 3/4, respectively.
In the 5,000m race, Austin Duckworth set a new career-best with his time of 15:04.65, en route to a finish in third.
"I'm really pleased with the high jumpers and the way they're starting the season," Glance said. "For Quentin Petty to make the finals as a freshman, he deserves a lot of kudos to perform how he did tonight. Austin Duckworth ran a very competitive race. I thought he was going to finish second, but fell just short and I'm proud of him. Hopefully we can have some good things happen again tomorrow out here."
The Invitational will commence on Saturday morning at 11:00 a.m., picking up with the completion of the heptathlon events. The last event is scheduled for a 5:15 p.m. start.
