LEXINGTON, Ky. - The University of Alabama women's track and field team completed day one of the Kentucky Invitational Friday at the E.J. Nutter Field House.
"It feels good to be back in it," head track and field coach Sandy Fowler said. "The girls were ready to compete and want to do well. We did start off well tonight and I think that will funnel into tomorrow. This meet is important just to get an idea of where everybody is. I think we're heading the right direction."
Sophomore Amethyst Holmes led the way for the Tide in the weight throw where she set a new personal-best by nearly five feet. Her mark of 53-1 was good enough for 17th place.
She was followed by the freshman duo of Lee Stowers and Wilamena Hopkins. Stowers also nearly set a personal-best by five feet as she heaved the 20-pound weight 50-7 1/2. Hopkins turned in a mark of 46-4.
"I thought in the whole we did pretty well," Fowler said. "We only had two events tonight and we had some of our girls set personal bests. Katherine didn't get a height tonight, but she was very consistent on the runway. She just hasn't had much time to work on her event because it's been 30 degrees outside."
The meet will commence with field events Saturday morning at 9:30 a.m. before the running events start at 11:30 a.m. Fans can follow the action on ukathletics.com/track which will be providing live statistics.
