LEXINGTON, Ky. - The University of Alabama men's track and field team completed day one of the Kentucky Invitational Friday at the E.J. Nutter Field House. The highlight of the day was sophomore Tyler Campbell as he jumped a NCAA provisional qualifying mark in the high jump.
"It's good to get back started," head track and field coach Harvey Glance said. "We're coming off our best finish ever in cross country. This is a pretty good team that we've put together this year. Hopefully by the third meet of the season we'll be in the full swing of things."
Campbell got the 2010 season off on the right foot with a personal-best clearance of 7-0 1/4 in the high jump to finish second overall. The mark is the eighth-best in Alabama school history.
Freshman Mike Edwards competed in the high jump as well, finishing seventh, clearing the bar set at 6-10 1/4.
Junior Ronald James turned in another top-10 finish for the Tide as he placed 10th in the triple jump with a leap of 46-6 3/4.
"The guys did an outstanding job today," Glance said. "We're off to a good start to the 2010 season with an NCAA provisional mark. We expect to hopefully get a couple more marks this weekend."
The meet will commence with field events Saturday morning at 9:30 a.m. before the running events start at 11:30 a.m. Fans can follow the action on ukathletics.com/track which will be providing live statistics.
