
Soccer Wraps Up Season with Awards Banquet

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The Alabama women's soccer team officially closed the 2009 campaign when it hosted the annual end of the season awards banquet at "The Zone" in Bryant-Denny Stadium. Coaches, players, parents, and administrators attended the dinner honoring the success of the fall season.
Head coach Todd Bramble distributed awards, voted on by the team, honoring certain players that made a difference during the season. For their hard work throughout the year, sophomore Laura Nicholls won the Coaches Award, freshman Kaitlyn Smith was named offensive MVP, sophomore Veronika Wolfkeil won defensive MVP, and sophomore goalkeeper Justine Bernier won all-around MVP accolades.
Bernier had an impressive sophomore season being recognized by the conference coaches as second-team All-SEC. The goalkeeper from Oakville, Ontario, was named SEC Defensive Player of the Week for the week of Sept. 21, 2009. Bernier averaged 6.44 saves per game, best in the SEC.
Junior forward Brooke Rogers was named to the SEC Community Service team. Rogers, a junior from Cincinnati, Ohio, has been immersed in the Tuscaloosa community since arriving at the Capstone three years ago. This season Rogers participated in the Together We Can SEC Food Drive, the YMCA Soccer Camp, the Read Across America program, and the Girl Scouts of Tuscaloosa Clinic. In here three years at the Capstone, Rogers has worked with eight different community service programs.
The soccer team also received academic awards for hard work in the classroom for the fall semester.
The entire team earned the NSCAA Academic Team Award for a 3.22 team GPA and placed 10 of 24 players on the honor roll. Two players earned a 4.0 GPA last semester.
Alex Butera, Victoria Frederick, Grace Lawson and Rogers were all named to the NSCAA All-South Regional Scholar Team for their hard work on and off the field in the fall.
