Throughout the season, Rolltide.com will sit down with various members of the volleyball team and staff and ask a series of questions to get to know them better. Today, we caught up with freshman defensive specialist/libero Kelsey Anderson. Anderson is a PrepVolleyball.com High School All-American and was named Kentucky State Player of the Year and Miss Kentucky Volleyball in 2008.
RT: Your high school program, Mercy Academy, went 40-1 to win the state championship and finished second in the nation, and you were named the 2008 Kentucky State Player of the Year as well as 2008 Miss Kentucky Volleyball. What are you most proud of from your high school accomplishments?
KA: From my High School accomplishments I am most proud of winning the state title my senior year. I am most proud of that because I was able to share that experience with my teammates, coaches, and the fans. It was a night that I will never forget. We had a record crowd and our fans were awesome.
RT: You are from Kentucky, are you looking forward to playing the Wildcats this season?
KA: Yes! I am really looking forward to going to Lexington and having all my family and friends there.
RT: You made time for other activities in high school, such as Project Life and Senior Service, why are helping programs like that important to you?
KA: Helping programs are important to me because I feel like I have been so blessed throughout my life with my family, friends, and just the great opportunities that I have been given. I feel like I should give back to the community and help other people that may not have been as blessed as me.
RT: You are a kinesiology major here at Alabama, what is your dream job?
KA: My dream job would be working with athletes. I would love to be an athletic trainer or collegiate coach.
RT: When and why did you start playing volleyball?
KA: I started playing volleyball in the first grade. I started out playing every sport I could play, but volleyball was the sport that I loved the most and stuck with.
RT: Do you have any pregame rituals or superstitions that you do before every game?
KA: I am a very superstitious person. For every volleyball game I have to straighten my hair. With each season I have something different I have to do. Whatever I do before our first game, is what I will have to do before every game for the rest of the season. I also don't like washing my knee pads during season. I know that it is gross, but I just can't do it!
RT: Who, if anyone, have you tried to model your game after?
KA: I really don't have anyone that I try to model my game after. I just try to continue to get better and play hard every time I step on the court.
RT: What's the most embarrassing thing you have done during a volleyball game?
KA: The most embarrassing thing I have ever done was probably trip when I was jump serving. I still tried to hit the ball, but the ball went to the 10-foot line on our side of the net and rolled over to the other side.
RT: Why did you choose to come to the University of Alabama?
KA: I choose Alabama because it had everything I ever wanted in a school. It was a big SEC, tradition, and football school. The campus was beautiful, and I loved the players and coaches.
