MILWAUKEE, Wis. - The women's tennis team won all six of its matches Saturday at the Milwaukee Tennis Classic with two coming in doubles and the remaining four in singles. The three-day tournament, now in its 34th season, is being held at the Western Racquet Club.
"Today was a much better day," said head coach Jenny Mainz. "We did a good job working ourselves into better situations. The goals coming into this tournament were to compete well, make adjustments and get better, and I think we did all those things today. Overall, I was really pleased with the performances."
The Crimson Tide doubles teams had a bit of a different look today with freshman Alexa Guarachi and junior Paulina Bigos pairing together, while sophomore Taylor Lindsey and senior Alice Tunaru made up the other duo. Guarachi and Bigos had an easy time with the Western Michigan tandem of senior Yumi Matsuto and junior Amanda Moccia winning 8-2. Lindsey and Tunaru's match was much closer, but the Alabama pair would take the 9-7 advantage over Bronco senior Emily Dudzik and freshman Maggie Remynse.
In singles, Guarachi took control of her match from the start defeating Marquette sophomore Paola Calderon 6-1, 6-3. Bigos and Lindsey also took care of business in two sets with the Tide senior winning 6-4, 6-4 over Golden Eagle sophomore Olga Fisher, while Lindsey picked up a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Marquette junior Christina Ruiz. Tunaru withstood another lengthy battle despite dropping the first set 6-3. She would come back to take the second 6-4 and the super tiebreaker 10-7 giving Alabama a six-match sweep on the day.
"Alice Tunaru did an excellent job today and had to pull herself back into this one much as she did yesterday," explained Mainz. "She is really doing a great job working. Paulina Bigos is also doing the same as well. Taylor Lindsey rebounded well after a loss yesterday, and Alexa Guarachi played commanding tennis today. The team is doing a great job getting behind each other. Our goal is to finish out strong tomorrow."
The Tide wraps up play at the Milwaukee Tennis Classic tomorrow with its final round of doubles and singles.
