Port of Spain, Trinidad - Alabama freshman high jumper Krystle Schade concluded her outstanding rookie campaign while representing Team USA at the 2009 Pan American Junior Championships in Port of Spain, Trinidad at Hasley Crawford National Stadium.
Team USA swept the top two positions in the high jump in the same fashion the athletes did at the USA Junior Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Schade finished second to U.S. teammate Maya Pressley with both ladies clearing the bar set at 5-9 1/4. Pressley was given the gold because Schade had a missed attempt earlier in the competition.
"I think its tremendous experience for her to get to compete on the international stage and for her to compete well is a testament to her strong mental outlook," assistant coach Scott Roberts said. "I think this kid has a tremendous future ahead of her and I'm just real excited that she's going to be a member of this team for at least three more years."
Schade advanced to the Pan American Junior Championships by finishing second in the high jump with a clearance of 5-10 ½ at the USA Junior Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Maya Pressley of City of Lauderhill won the national championship with a jump of 5-11 1/2. Pressley and Schade outlasted the field of 10 to make the USA team.
In addition to making the USA squad in 2009, Schade earned All-Mideast Region honors by placing fourth at the NCAA Mideast Region Championships after a jump-off with a clearance of 5-9 1/4 and also finished 11th at the NCAA Championships clearing a height of 5-10 3/4.
