TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Eleven games against 2009 postseason participants, including eight that advanced to the NCAA Tournament, highlight the 2009-10 women's basketball schedule that was announced Thursday by head coach Wendell Hudson.
In addition to its Southeastern Conference lineup, the Crimson Tide will potentially play teams from nine other conferences including the Atlantic Sun, Big South, Big Ten, Conference USA, Mid-Eastern Athletic, Mountain West, Ohio Valley, Southland and Southwestern Athletic.
"We are all really looking forward to getting started this season," said head coach Wendell Hudson. "We definitely have a tougher non-conference schedule than last. In addition to playing tougher opponents, we also play a lot of games closer together. All in all I think it will better prepare us for SEC competition."
Alabama will play in two exhibition contests, first on Nov. 4 against North Alabama followed by the annual Crimson & White Scrimmage on Nov. 8. The Tide officially kicks off the season on the road at the Islander Tip-Off Tournament hosted by Texas A&M Corpus Christi. The tournament field will feature Air Force, Alabama, Tennessee Tech and Texas A&M Corpus Christi, but matchups are yet to be determined. Alabama has never faced Texas A&M Corpus Christi nor Air Force in its 35-year history.
The Tide opens its home slate Nov. 17 against Jackson State. This is one of two regular-season double headers with the men's basketball team in Coleman Coliseum.
On Nov. 21, Alabama will head to Nashville to take on Belmont and will return home for a Nov. 24 game against Southeastern Louisiana.
Alabama will, once again, spend the Thanksgiving holiday on the road traveling cross-country to take part in the Holiday Beach Classic in San Luis Obispo, Calif. The Tide is scheduled to take on Cal State Bakersfield and Illinois in the round robin style tournament. Cal State Bakersfield is entering its fourth transition year in becoming an NCAA Division I institution, and Alabama will be its first-ever SEC opponent.
The month of December will open with an away contest at Alabama State on Dec. 4 before taking on Northwestern State at home on Dec. 6. Alabama will then play a pair of games on the road in Florida against UCF and Florida A&M on Dec. 14 and Dec. 16, respectively. The final matchup before breaking for the holidays will be played on Dec. 21 against Presbyterian College at home.
After returning from break, the Tide has one additional tune up before the conference season gets started against Southern Mississippi on Dec. 30. This date will serve as the second doubleheader with the men's team.
The 16-game conference lineup begins Jan. 3 when Alabama welcomes Georgia. The remainder of the month will feature contests at Mississippi (Jan. 7), Auburn (Jan. 14), Kentucky (Jan. 17), and Vanderbilt (Jan. 28) and at home against South Carolina (Jan. 10), Florida (Jan. 21), Arkansas (Jan. 24) and LSU (Jan. 31).
February's schedule begins on the road at Mississippi State on the fourth and will rotate home and away contests throughout the month. The three remaining home games will be against Auburn (Feb. 7), Tennessee (Feb. 18) and Mississippi State (Feb. 25), while the last three road matchups will be at Georgia (Feb. 14), Arkansas (Feb. 21) and Florida (Feb. 28) for the regular-season finale.
