TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The Alabama soccer team wrapped up its preseason training schedule and officially opened the 2009 campaign. With two-a-days behind the team the Crimson Tide played its first match at home and fell by the score of 2-0 to instate foe UAB.
"There was a really good crowd Friday night," head coach Todd Bramble said. "There was a lot of people and good enthusiasm. It is a weekend that is behind us and weekend that we aren't happy with the result but there are a lot of things we can take as positives from the performance."
Three freshmen made their first collegiate starts for the Crimson Tide and a total of seven played in the season opener. Bramble applauded the effort of the rookies, including Kaitlyn Smith.
"I thought she [Smith] was the player of the game for us, especially in the first half," Bramble explained. "She had a great night and if she continues to play like that she has a bright future here. We got seven freshmen in the game and I think that is very important for us going forward."
On Saturday the team had a recovery day which included training for players that did not log a half on the field. On Sunday Bramble wanted to simulate the normal weekend for the Tide where they will play both a Friday night and Sunday match.
After an extensive film session the team went into a full 90 minute scrimmage, concentrating on the offensive third of the field.
The Week That Was has been conducted on video as well. Fans can check out an interview with coach Bramble on the side of the soccer page every Monday.
