TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The University of Alabama men's golf team released its 2009-10 schedule that closely resembles last season's slate especially in the fall.
The Crimson Tide will play in the same four fall events that they played last year beginning with the Carpet Capital Collegiate in Rocky Face, Ga. on the Farm Golf Course Sept. 11-13. The first tournament also coincides with the 2009 Walker Cup at Merion Golf Club outside of Philadelphia, which sophomore Bud Cauley was selected for earlier this month.
"The (Carpet Collegiate) is a great tournament," head coach Jay Seawell said. "They have been putting on this tournament for more than 20 years, and the best of the best always come. The unique thing about it is that it is also the same time as the Walker Cup, so we won't have Bud at the first tournament. But that will give another young person an opportunity to make their stamp on Alabama golf and college golf, so I'm looking forward to seeing how we handle that."
Next on the slate is a trip across the country to Bremerton, Wash., where UA will play in the Ping/Golfweek Invitational. The squad then returns home to host the Jerry Pate National Collegiate Invitational at the Old Overton Club in Birmingham. Alabama has won the team title at the Jerry Pate the last three seasons.
"Old Overton has gone through some extensive changes to its golf course, so it won't be the same golf course that we've played," Seawell said. "They have added 300 to 400 yards worth of improvements so the scores will be a little bit different. But we look forward to that tournament because it has Mr. Pate's name on it, and of course Old Overton has always been good to Alabama golf."
The Tide closes fall competition at the Isleworth Collegiate Invitational in Windermere, Fla. where the team took second place a year ago.
"We finish the fall at Isleworth, home of Tiger Woods and many PGA Tour players, which I believe makes it a tournament that most college players look forward to," Seawell said. "Tiger is there. He's out and about walking around and driving his golf cart around. There are other Tour players there, and the prestige of Isleworth makes it such a great event, so we look forward to going back there as well."
The spring season opens with two familiar tournaments before the Tide breaks in three new events leading into postseason play. Alabama starts the spring at the Puerto Rico Classic then travels to Jacksonville, Fla. to play in the John Hayt Collegiate.
UA's final three events of the regular season will all take place in the state of Georgia beginning with the Schenkel E-Z-Go Invitational held at the Forest Heights Country Club in Statesboro, Ga.. Next are the Linger Longer Invitational and finally the Administaff Augusta State Invitational to close out the regular schedule.
Postseason play commences at the SEC Championships in St. Simons Island, Ga. April 16-18, at the Frederica Golf Club. NCAA Regional play begins on May 13 with the NCAA Championships starting on May 25 at the Honors Golf Course in Chattanooga, Tenn. The Tide finished 15th at the NCAA Championships last season.
