TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Alabama right-hander Austin Hyatt was named the Southeastern Conference Pitcher of the Week following his complete-game, three-hitter against then-No. 11 Arkansas this past weekend the league office announced on Monday.
Hyatt is the fourth UA player honored by the SEC Office this season and second in as many weeks. Junior utility-man Brandon May was named the SEC Player of the Week last Monday. Senior right fielder Kent Matthes won the award twice in March.
"Austin Hyatt has had a great year for us," Alabama head coach Jim Wells said. "He was very good against Arkansas and is very deserving of this honor. He has had an All-SEC type year for us on the mound and set the tone each and every weekend for us with his toughness."
Hyatt, an All-American and All-SEC candidate, held Arkansas to one run on three hits en route to his fourth career complete game and second of the season. He added seven strikeouts and no walks.
The senior retired the first eight batters in the game before allowing a two-out, solo home run to Collin Kuhn in the third inning. Casey Leavitt followed with a two-out base hit, before Hyatt retired the next nine Arkansas batters in order. In the sixth, Arkansas got a two-out single from Scott Lyons and Andy Wilkins was hit by a pitch, before Hyatt retired Zack Cox to end the inning. Hyatt retired the last 10 Arkansas batters in order.
For the season, Hyatt is 8-1 (.889) with a 3.13 ERA. He has started 12 games this season and left with the lead in all 12 games. He leads the SEC with 89 innings pitched and ranks in the top five nationally with 0.91 walks (89 IP, 9 BB) per nine innings.
