TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The Alabama men's track and field team will send two split squads to different locations to compete this weekend. With both squads taking to the oval on Saturday, sprinters and field event athletes will compete at the UTEP Invitational held at Kidd Field while the distance runners will toe the line in the 30th Sun Angel Track Classic (Arizona State) at Joe Sellah Track at Sun Angel Stadium.
In El Paso, Texas, Alabama will look to Ray Jadusingh who has been hot on the track as of late coming in with four events that he has qualified for the regional championships in. Jadusingh holds the third fastest 200m time (20.73) in the SEC, which is also the fourth fastest time in the country.
Tyler Boswell is hoping to get a regional mark in the high jump this weekend. He is currently ranked third in the conference (6-8 3/4) and needs just two more inches to qualify for regionals. Boswell boasts a personal best of 7-1 1/4, a mark that would lead the SEC.
Also looking good for the Crimson Tide in 2009 are javelin throwers Trevor Denkers and Chris Lenart. Denkers set a personal best by almost 11 feet last week at the Florida Relays to qualify for the regional championships. Lenart is two for two in setting personal bests this season and has improved his mark by nearly 20 feet; he is less than two feet from the regional qualifying mark.
In Tempe, Ariz., Alabama will take Aaron Stockstell to compete in the 800m run, an event where he ranks fourth in the conference (1:51.47). Emmanuel Bor will look for a regional mark in the 1,500m run and is just under three seconds from doing so with his seasonal best time.
Also competing in Grand Canyon state will be Tyson David and Andrew Kirwa in the 5,000m run. This will be David's first appearance in the 5,000m since the NCAA Indoor Championships where he finished fifth after winning the SEC Indoor title. As for Kirwa, this will be his first race of the 2009 outdoor season.
Abraham Kutingala, after taking a week off after his impressive performance in the 10,000m at Stanford where he qualified for the NCAA Championships provisionally, will now have a try at the 3,000m steeplechase. Kutingala holds the fifth fastest time in school history in the event.
