DES MOINES, Iowa - On a day when the weather was not particularly ideal for track and field, the Alabama men's team faired well at the 100th running of the Drake Relays with strong finishes from sprints to distance on Saturday at Drake Stadium.
The 4x100m relay team consisting of Shaun Gaiser, Brandon Spradley, Ray Jadusingh and Matt Watson finished third in the finals with a time of 41.27.
After taking most of the wind and cold at the front of the pack in the 3,000m steeplechase, Abraham Kutingala fell to a sixth place finish running a time of 9:07.59.
After helping lead the 4x100m relay team to a third place finish, Jadusingh came back in the 100m final finishing sixth with a time of 10.75.
Emmanuel Bor and Andrew Kirwa competed in the seeded 1,500m race finishing fifth and eighth with times of 3:49.11 and 3:51.18, respectively.
In the 800m, Aaron Stockstell led the first lap before falling to seventh over the next lap en route to a seventh place finish with a time of 1:52.86.
Former Alabama All-American Augustus Maiyo won the 8,000m road race by seven seconds with a time of 24:16. The win marked Maiyo's first win of his professional career.
"I think today was just a day of survival, we did the best we could to keep the guys focused and keep them from getting hurt," head coach Harvey Glance said. "This wasn't a day to chase records. It was 49 degrees, windy and rainy. Again we were just trying to survive today and we were able to do that and kept everybody healthy."
The Crimson Tide will split the squads next week with athletes traveling to the Mississippi Open in Oxford, Miss. and the Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational in Stanford, Calif.
