TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The Alabama women's track and field team opened up competition at the 100th running of the Drake Relays at Drake Stadium on Wednesday with two heptathletes having good starts to their weekend.
Even in the first event, both Chealsea Taylor and Rachel Robbs set personal bests in the 100m hurdles. Taylor finished 9th with a time of 14.64 while Robbs followed closely in 11th with a time of 14.73.
Taylor faired well in the high jump where she finished third with a clearance of 5-8 3/4.
In the shot put, Robbs turned in a fourth place finish with a heave of 40-6 3/4. Taylor set another personal best with her throw of 33-7 1/2 to finish 10th.
Taylor and Robbs ended their stellar first day in the 200m where Taylor finished second with a time of 24.27. Robbs ended her day with a personal best in the event by .22 seconds crossing the line in 25.71.
After four of seven events, Taylor is in third place with 3,307 points and Robbs is in eighth with 3,051 points.
"I think they both had a great first day," head coach Sandy Fowler said. "They are both looking like they are going to set new personal bests and I think their scores will be very close to a school record if not setting a new one."
The long jump, javelin and 800m events in the heptathlon will resume at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday.
