TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The No. 6 ranked Alabama softball team will put together more than just a three game series this weekend against Arkansas. Featured on the weekend slate in addition to the games are the Strikeout Breast Cancer event and the return of the Alumni. The breast cancer awareness game is scheduled for game on of the doubleheader Saturday while after the conclusion of the twin-bill the alumni will return to the Alabama Softball Complex.
"We think this is a great chance for us to raise awareness of a disease that hit home with us this spring," head coach Patrick Murphy said. "Hopefully the West Alabama community will rally with us this weekend and help us strike out breast cancer."
In partnership with DCH Foundation, Inc., Alabama Softball Proudly presents Strikeout Breast Cancer, April 18, 2009.
During the doubleheader against the Arkansas Razorbacks, the Alabama Crimson Tide Softball team is working to raise awareness about breast cancer and has partnered with the DCH Foundation, Inc. to rally its fan base around the fight against breast cancer and finding a cure. By "thinking pink" and encouraging fans to support this worthy cause the Alabama Softball family is doing its part to help fight the disease and help fund breast cancer research in the Tuscaloosa area.
Pink jerseys worn by the Tide in game one of this weekend's series will be auctioned to raise funds for the DCH Breast Cancer Fund as part of a silent auction during the Saturday doubleheader at the Alabama Softball Complex. Fans will have the chance to bid on Pink Softball jerseys autographed by the entire Crimson Tide squad, head coach Patrick Murphy as well as game worn jerseys from Saturday's game. Auction winners will be announced during the fifth inning of game two of the series.
The decision to help support breast cancer awareness and the DCH Breast Cancer Fund locally was made in honor of Kelley Montalvo Day. The senior third basemen will be honored on Saturday for her years as a member of the Crimson Tide team. This spring Kelley's mother, Grisel Montalvo was diagnosed with breast cancer and is among the limited number of survivors of breast cancer.
The Alabama alumni will return to Tuscaloosa for Alumni Day. The former players will take to the field approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of game two.
Returning to the Alabama Softball Complex is Carrie Moreman-Ashley, Alabama's first All-American in 1999. Joining Moreman-Ashley is Kelly Kretschman, a four-time All-American, two-time Olympian and Shelley Laird, who won over 100 games and struck out over 1,000 batters in her career.
Also in attendance will be JC Chapman-Hammer, played on the first two teams, winning the SEC tournament championship in 1998 and Christy Kyle-Bush, who played on the first four teams and led the team to its first WCWS appearance in 2000. Other former greats are slated to appear as well.
