TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The No. 1 ranked Alabama softball team defeated UAB 8-1 Wednesday night at the Alabama Softball Complex. The Crimson Tide was once again efficient at the plate, scoring eight runs on seven hits en route to improving to 14-1 on the season. The Blazers drop to 6-9 on the year.
Alabama opened the game with three runs in the first and then tacked on four runs in the fifth to run away from UAB. The Crimson Tide added the final blow in the sixth to earn the win.
UA took advantage of a UAB error and was able to plate three runs in the frame on one hit to seize the early lead. The Blazers answered back with a solo shot in the top of the second off of the bat of Mandy Lowman.
The Crimson Tide then racked up four runs on four hits in the fifth. Whitney Larsen started off the inning with an RBI single down the right field line that plated Kelley Montalvo. Lauren Parker then singled through the right side to bring home Larsen. Newcomer Jazlyn Lunceford hit an infield single that brought home Parker and also Cassandra Reilly-Boccia off an error.
Freshman Jennifer Fenton hit her first career home run in the sixth over the right centerfield wall on a 1-2 count. The homer capped off the Crimson Tide scoring.
Lunceford led Alabama at the plate with two hits. Amanda Locke earned her third win in the circle on the season while Kelsi Dunne recorded her first save of the year. Locke struck out three and scattered six hits and allowed a run in 4 2/3 innings. Dunne struck out four in 2 1/3 innings and allowed one hit.
UA will host the Easton Challenge this weekend, with the first game scheduled for Friday, March 6 at 6:00 p.m. against Washington. A total of nine games will be played this weekend with the first pitting Washington against Baylor at 1:00 p.m.
