TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The 16th-ranked women's tennis team returns to action Monday, March 23 when it hosts No. 65 Oregon at the University of Alabama Tennis Stadium for a 3:00 p.m. (CST) start. The Crimson Tide enters the match at 12-1 on the season, while the Ducks stand at 7-7 overall.
"It's nice to step outside of SEC league play and compete against an out of region team," said head coach Jenny Mainz. "Oregon plays a stout schedule in the Pac 10 Conference and has a solid team. We will need to be prepared to fire from all cylinders on Monday."
Prior to a week-long break, Alabama beat then-No. 46 Mississippi State7-0 for the Tide's first sweep of a conference opponent since the 2006 season. That same week Alabama set a new school win streak record of 11 in its victory over Marquette. Freshman Taylor Lindsey continued her stellar singles play picking up wins in each of the Tide's three matches. She moved to 12-0 on the dual-match season in singles. In the latest Campbells'/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division I Women's Rankings sophomore Tiffany Welcher came in at No. 105 on the singles charts.
Oregon has had a bit of a tough stretch as it is currently on a four-match losing streak with its latest loss coming at Washington State 4-3. The last time the Ducks picked up a win was on Feb. 27 when they beat Arizona 4-3. Oregon has one ranked doubles pair in senior Ana Cecilia Olivos and sophomore Pavlina Smatova. The duo ranks 39th and is 7-1 on the season at No. 1 doubles. Playing at No. 1 singles for the Ducks is senior Carmen Seremeta who holds a 6-7 record.
The history between Alabama and Oregon is quite short with the two programs meeting just once before. In the series first and only match, which took place on Jan. 27, 2007, the Ducks picked up a 6-1 victory over the Tide.
"This is a good opportunity to sharpen our game prior to jumping back into SEC play," added Mainz. "We need to continue giving ourselves the best chance and working to advance as a team."
