TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Just a matter of days after opening its spring season at the Clemson Regatta, the Alabama rowing team is back in action Tuesday, with its home opener on the Black Warrior River against Kansas State. The dual meet is slated to get underway at noon.
"It's a quick turn-around for us, but it should be a very good competition," Alabama head coach Larry Davis said. "Kansas State is better than they were a year ago when we had some very close races with them, so we are going to have be at our best to come out on top this week."
In addition to Tuesday's dual meet, the Wildcats have been in Tuscaloosa training for the last several days and will be accustomed to the conditions on the Black Warrior. Alabama is coming off a strong showing at Clemson on Saturday, including a pair of wins by the Tide's Novice 8+ boat.
There are five races scheduled, with the first being the Novice 8+, which means there will be eight first-year rowers in the boat in addition to the coxswain (indicated by the "+"), at 12 p.m. The next race, the Varsity 4+, will start approximately 15 minutes later and will be followed, in order, by the Second Varsity 8+, the First Varsity 8+ and the Novice 4+ races.
Tuesday's course will be the reverse of the Crimson Tide's usual race-day setup with the starting line coming just to the east of River Road Park East while the finish line is set to the west, in line with the Crimson Tide's boathouse. Fans will be able to watch the start from River Road Park East, located at the intersection of Jack Warner Parkway and McCorvey Drive. The finish line can be seen from River Road Park West and from the Tide's boathouse, located on the north side of the Black Warrior River.
