ATHENS, Ga. - After breaking almost a dozen school records at the recent Southeastern Conference Championships, the Alabama Swimming and Diving team came back and broke two more at the Bulldog Invitational in Athens, Ga. today.
Just a week after becoming the first Crimson Tide swimmer to break the two-minute mark in the IM, sophomore Kate Shannon Gray became the first to go under 1:59 in the event, posting a 1:58.74. In addition to lowering the school record, she also earned an NCAA provisional qualifying standard and a chance to compete at the national championships.
Junior Hannah Brinks continued an outstanding year of her own, breaking the school record in the 100 butterfly with a 52.97, becoming the first Tide woman under 53 seconds. She broke Stacy Potter's record of 53.08 set in 1995. Brinks is one of four women on this year's squad who have a spot in Alabama's all-time top 10 list in the 100 and 200 butterfly. Brinks' time was also better than the NCAA provisional standard and earns her a chance at the upcoming national championships.
Sophomore diver Olivia Covey scored 308.70 points off the three-meter board to earn a trip to the NCAA Zone B Championships. Her total is the second highest for the Tide this season.
Sophomore Alan Axford had a stand-out swim in the 100 backstroke, posting a 48.57, which ranks him fourth all-time for the Crimson Tide.
