TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Alabama head women's track and field coach Sandy Fowler led the Crimson Tide through their 8th week of practice as five athletes competed at the LSU Twilight Invitational, however, most took the weekend off from competition. The Tide is preparing for the SEC Championships beginning Feb. 27 in Lexington, Ky.
Angelica Howard heaved a personal best, NCAA qualifying mark of 50-4 3/4, almost two full feet than her previous best at the LSU Twilight Invitational. Howard took hold of the No. 4 spot in Alabama school history in the event. The new mark also takes her from ninth to the fourth best throw in the conference.
"Obviously getting a provisional in Angelica was huge last week," Fowler said. "Also just getting in one more meet for the girls that competed will be huge for them as well."
The Crimson Tide will now concentrate on perfecting forms and technical things about their respective events. They obviously want to stay feeling fresh going into the SEC Championships.
"Coming off last week, our training was less for the whole team but this week we'll pull out a day of weights and plyometrics," Fowler said. "Everybody's going to be resting up this week so that they're rested and ready to go this weekend."
Alabama will compete at the SEC Indoor Track and Field Championships Feb. 27-March 1 at Nutter Field House. The meet is being hosted by the University of Kentucky.
