BATON ROUGE, La. - Five members of the Alabama women's track and field team concluded action at the LSU Twilight Invitational Friday night at the Carl Maddox Field House. Angelica Howard highlighted the meet by throwing a provisional qualifying mark in the shot put.
Howard heaved a personal best, NCAA qualifying distance of 50-4 3/4, almost two full feet than her previous best. Howard took hold of the No. 4 spot in Alabama school history in the event. The new mark also takes her from ninth to the fourth best throw in the conference.
"In a thrower's mind, the 50 foot mark is a big threshold to get over and now that she's (Howard) done that I think she'll get drastically better," head coach Sandy Fowler said. "Just having the opportunity for these girls to get in another competition is going to help them going into the SEC Championships."
Audra Frimpong placed 10th in the long jump with a leap of 17-9. Rachel Robbs was 11th with a personal best leap of 17-6 3/4.
Elizabeth Wilson finished 12th in the weight throw heaving the 20-pound weight 46-0 3/4.
In the 60 meter hurdles, Kimberley Laing (8.48) and Frimpong (8.74) advanced to the finals finishing fifth and sixth, respectively.
Alabama will travel to Lexington, Ky. next week for the SEC Championships set to begin on Feb. 27.
